Spelling

We believe spelling should be logical, engaging, and empowering. Our approach is grounded in phonics, morphology, and etymology – helping children understand the why behind spelling, not just the how.

We teach spelling through a carefully sequenced programme that:

  • Builds from sounds to words – starting with phonics, we connect sounds (phonemes) to spelling patterns (graphemes).

  • Explores word structure – we teach children about prefixes, suffixes, root words, and how words are constructed.

  • Connects to meaning – through etymology (the history of words), learners see how spelling reflects meaning and origin.

  • Reinforces through practice – engaging lessons, multisensory activities, and regular review help children commit spelling to long-term memory.

Rather than relying on rote memorisation, our approach helps children become spelling detectives – recognising patterns, applying rules, and gaining confidence in using ambitious vocabulary in their writing.

Our goal is simple: to help every child become a capable, curious, and confident speller.
