Summer 1 2025

Years 3 and 4 Enjoy a Memorable Term of Learning and Discovery

This term has been a particularly exciting and enriching time for the children in Years 3 and 4, as they immersed themselves in a fascinating World War II topic and celebrated learning in a variety of engaging and hands-on ways.

One of the highlights was learning all about World War II, with a special focus on the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The children were captivated by the stories of the past and took part in a wonderful VE Day picnic, where they dressed in red, white and blue, listened to wartime songs, and enjoyed eating with friends. It was a joyful and meaningful way to reflect on the sacrifices made during the war and to celebrate peace.

Another memorable experience was the visit to Duxford Imperial War Museum. The children were thrilled to watch planes take off and land, and especially loved seeing the iconic Spitfires up close. A real highlight was stepping into the operations room where wartime missions were coordinated — a powerful way to bring their learning about the Battle of Britain to life. They also explored the Land Warfare exhibition, gaining an understanding of life in the trenches and the challenges faced by soldiers during the war.

As part of their Design and Technology (DT) work, the children learnt about the lives of evacuees and designed their own special boxes to store precious belongings — just as children during the war might have done. This creative project helped them connect emotionally with the experiences of young evacuees and showcased their thoughtful design skills.

In addition to their historical learning, the children also enjoyed a fun and informative visit to the School Farm and Country Fair. Here, they explored the importance of sustainability and learnt about local food production. They particularly loved meeting the animals and seeing firsthand how food is grown and raised. It was a fantastic opportunity to develop a greater appreciation for the environment and where their food comes from.

It has been a truly enriching term, full of hands-on learning, meaningful connections to history, and real-world experiences. We’re so proud of how engaged and enthusiastic the children have been — they have shown curiosity, empathy, and creativity throughout. We look forward to building on this fantastic learning journey in the term ahead - our next topic will be 'Splish, Splash, Splosh!
