KS1 Curriculum

Spring 1 2026

What a fantastic half term we have had in KS1 exploring Australia. The children have enjoyed learning about the location of Australia, some of the cultures and traditions and all about the animals which live there. We celebrated Australia day too by making our own rain-sticks, didgeridoos and tasting delicious fairy bread.

In Science, we have used our topic on 'Animals' to learn about the structures of animals and have made beautiful fact-files all about the animals native to Australia. We have looked at what these animals like to eat and what they look like. We looked closely at the Kangaroos and were amazed that they could be taller than the children.

In RE this half term we have enjoyed learning about the Hindu festival of Holi. We learnt about the story of Krishna and enjoyed creating our own colourful, rangoli patterns outside on the playground. We learnt about being thankful and celebrating good triumphing over bad.

We enjoyed learning about numbers on February 6th, for the NSPCC Numbers day. In Year 2 we were learning about what we could buy from the shop, with a budget and the Year 1 children enjoyed making Maths Cities with the Numicon pieces.

We also enjoyed Safer Internet day, which this year focused on the use of AI. The children undertook activities which taught them about what Voice activated speakers can do and what they can't. We decided they were useful, but they weren't as good as our trusted adults!

Next half term we look forward to our visit to Mountfitchet castle and delving into our 'Once Upon a Time' topic. We have some wonderful DT - making vehicles in Year 2 and sliding mechanisms in Year 1. We have World Book Day on the 5th of March, a Visit to Pizza Express for Oak class and an egg-cellent amount of Easter fun! We can't wait!
